What to Do When Your Roof is Leaking

What-to-do-with-a-leaky-roof-1-5db6f6b2d762a

We’ve all heard about roofs leaking, but very few of us have actually had to deal with a leaky roof on our own. In most instances, these issues come on quickly and out of nowhere, at least it appears that way. The reality, however, is that leaky roofs develop slowly and can occur because of various things that are happening with your roof. But, regardless of how long your roof has been in need of help or how severe the leak, there’s one thing for sure: you want to get this leak taken care of as quickly as possible.

The team at Denali Roofing, the Top Rated Local® Roofing Company in Fort Collins, has come across a fair share of leaky roofs in our time. The best way to avoid a leaky roof or the severe damage that leaks are capable of is by maintaining your roof and prioritizing the maintenance and repairs that your roof needs over time. In today’s blog post, we are going to go over what it is that you should do in the case that you find a leak in the roof of your home or commercial building. Let’s dive in.

Find the Leak

One of the first things that you’re going to want to do is figure out where the leak is. In most cases, leaks happen when a seal in the roof has cracked or completely broken. Some of the most common places that leaks form will be in skylights, chimneys, vents, pipes, or where the walls meet the roof. Aside from being able to determine the severity of the leak, this is  a great way to figure out whether or not the leak is next to any electrical wiring that could pose as a bigger danger.

Look for Additional Leaks

It can be rewarding to find the source of a leak in your home, but it’s important to note that there could be additional leaks that are creating the signs that you’ve noticed in your home. For that reason, it’s important that you don’t stop looking for leaks just because you’ve found a leak. Keep looking for any additional leaks in potential spaces. This, again, will ensure that your space is safe from the chances of water meeting any electrical sources, but it will also provide you with all of the information that you need to determine a proper solution.

Collect the Water

Water is capable of some serious damage, which is exactly why you want to make sure that, once you’ve found the leak, you’ve got something that will catch it. Depending on how large the leak is, a bucket will often be enough to keep water from damaging the rest of your home. Depending on where the leak is and how heavily the water is coming in, you will want to make sure that the placement of the bucket is in a safe space where it won’t spill over and that you’re checking it routinely to empty it out as needed. These two things will keep the water from doing any additional damage to your home.

Assess the Damage

Now that you’ve found the leak and controlled the water flow, it’s time to assess the damage. This is going to be critical in determining your next steps. If you caught the leak early on, it may just be a tiny bit of sealing that simply needs some patching. On the other hand, there are scenarios where the leak that you’re experiencing is due to much more serious issues and will require a professional for repairs. This may be in the form of drywall, shingles, and the like. Whatever the case may be, if the leak is coming from your roof, the next step should always be to call and have  a local roofing company inspect your roof. There could be much more going on than your bare eye can see.

As you assess the damage, it can be extremely beneficial to take pictures of what you’re seeing. Not only can this be beneficial for insurance claims, but it can help give professional roofers an idea of what they’re going to be working with before they even step into your home.

Contact a Professional Roofer

After you’ve done the things that we’ve listed above, the next thing that you’re going to want to do is call your local roofing company to come and get it taken care of.
